Railfuture Cymru/Wales in the News
Cardiff West Junction - RAIL Magazine issue 1026 (8-22 January 2025)
In his regional News section, Howard Johnson mentioned that "Railfuture has presented plans for capacity improvements at Cardiff West Junction, just west of Cardiff Central station, when it is renewed in about three years' time. It would allow more than the present two trains per hour to use the City line."
The above text is not quite accurate: Railfuture has NOT come up with specific plans for the enhancement (Network Rail has already done this). What Railfuture has actually done is to endorse a letter from Prof Mark Barry, calling for the enhancement to be done when the junction is renewed. Even so, Railfuture welcomes this publicity from RAIL Magazine as it highlighits our campaign objective.
The source material used by Howard Johnston is probably a paragraph from the Cymru/Wales column page 10 of Railwatch issue 182 (December 2024), which said "Railfuture has written to Transport secretary Louise Haigh in support of a message Professor Barry sent to her, calling for an upgrade to Cardiff West junction (just west of Cardiff Central station). Currently capacity on the City line is limited to two trains per hour. Professor Barry is urging that a "tactical intervention", costing up to £30 million, should be included when Network Rail renews the junction in about three years' time, releasing more capacity at this pinch point.
Railfuture has received official replies to its letter, recognising the need and confirmation that ways of enhancing the junction are being looked at.
